Monitoring visit by a team from the African Academy of Sciences

Last week (November 2023), my team and I had the pleasure of hosting a team from the African Academy of Sciences as part of their visit to monitor the ARISE pilot program. They saw first-hand degraded farmland soils in eastern Madagascar due to the continued use of swidden agriculture, which involves burning and rotating crops. This practice leads to decreasing yields and soil erosion.

Soon after we completed our baseline data collection with ~ 1,300 household farmers in February 2024, the two PhD students Ravaka Ralandisoa and Fetra Randriamihary and I visited our study villages to discuss the nuts and bolts of the additional credit that we are planning to transfer to the village savings groups in our study villages.
